ICSC CHIEF SCIENCE ADVISOR, PROFESSOR BOB CARTER, PASSES AWAY

January 20, 2016: Professor Robert (Bob) M. Carter passed away on January 19  after suffering a heart attack the previous week. ICSC will commenerate his life and his accomplishments over the next week with articles and messages that are pouring in from scientists and other admirers across the world. However, in the meantime, one essay about Professor Carter is especially significant, that from his old friend and scientific colleague Dr Gerrit van der Lingen.

Dr. van der Lingen starts:

I have known Bob Carter for a long time, since he was a senior lecturer in the Geology Department of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. We knew each other as colleagues. At that time, Bob had written about a mid-Oligocene unconformity, which he named the ”Marshall Paraconformity”. This concept evoked some scientific controversy, in which I was involved (Geological Society of New Zealand Newsletter 72, 1986: 26-33). However, it also generated much new research.

Dr. van der Lingen concludes:

Bob was a very generous person. Whenever I asked him for comments or information, he answered promptly. Even after he recently came back from the Paris COP21 conference. I asked him to send me some of his impressions of COP21. I also asked him if he was willing to write a short endorsement to put on the back cover of my (self-publishing) upcoming book “The Fable of a Stable Climate”. He promptly replied on both requests on 27 December. I will treasure his endorsement, which was probably one of his last actions. He will be sorely missed. The best way for us to show our appreciation and admiration for Bob is to continue our fight against the dark forces of man-made climate change activism.
